The sucession to the house of Braganza passed through two demale monarchs
- Maria I and her great grand daughter Maria II. Unless the current
Duke does not get his descent from another purely male descent branch of
the Braganzas he would not qualify for a place in the French succession.
Add to the fact that the Braganza claim to the Portuguese throne comes
through an illegitimate son and was only accepted because rule under the
then King Philip IV of Spain (who had a better and legitimate claim) was
unbearable.
