Pepin of Herstal was the son of Ansegisel, who died between 648 and
669, perhaps 662. Ansegisel is sometimes referred to as Mayor of
the Palace, but Settipani and Van Kerrebrouck (1993, p. 151) point
out that this is not attested by any contemporaneous source and thus
can't be relied on. Pepin's mother was St. Begga, who late in life
was the founder and abbess of Andenne. Ansegisel was the son of
St. Arnulf, Bishop of Metz, and Dode.
