OK, I'll give it a try. I assume it is because Robert III, who succeeded
his father Robert II in 1390, was born after his parents' marriage,
although he was "legitimized" (i.e., retroactively declared legitimate)
at their marriage.
So, that brings up the obvious question: If we assume that Robert III was
illegitimate (and therefore ineligible to succeed), who would be the
Scottish heir-of-line from 1371 onwards? (Robert II succeeded in 1371.)
[Don't ask me. I have no idea.]
