There I was, just beginning a daunting foray into Welsh thickets in search
of a recently-found ancient forebear, Gryffudd ap Llewelyn, d. 1063, when
who should come bounding out of a copse but Lady Godiva herself, Godgifu,
wife to Leofric, Earl of Mercia, from which union AElfgar, in his turn
Earl and father of Ealdgyth, Gryffudd's wife. Now this is no doubt old
news to some of you, but not to me. Just one of those odd little
serendipitous moments of delight for the genealogist, even if this
medieval stuff is a far remove from Soundex and Census, more like
collecting baseball cards than real nitty-gritty research.
By the way, when does soc.genealogy.medieval make its debut? Soon, I
hope. The loose ends are multiplying!
