If you use the IGI and find extractions, these are from primary sources,
such as church records. Many reputable genealogists use the IGI
extractions for clues.

Unfortunately, when you get into the Medieval period, these are few and
far between. You need to get into the various rolls series, which have
been abstracted, translated and published and Inquisitions Post Mortem
which are likewise published. It is also nice to have a good-sized
bankroll to hire somebody to do original source research at the PRO and
County Record Offices, etc.
Hopefully, Paul Reed and the ASPG will eventually have the website done
which is planning to have an explanation of the various medieval English
primary sources.
