I have had very good luck in the past in contacting my distant German
relatives by writing to addresses found in Internet phone directories. Here
is a site which may help you in composing and writing your letters. I would
suggest that you might write a copy in English, as well as a copy in
Italian. I asked my cousin once how my German was, and did he have any
problem reading my letters. He said he had very little problems with my
German, but when he did, he just referred to my English one!! Here is the
site.

You need to give them sufficient information about your family ties to
Italy, in order for them to relate to your search.
Good luck on your search.
