Upcoming programs and conferences in Northern Virginia in February and
March:
1. On Thursday, February 22, 2007 the Fairfax Genealogical Society
(FxGS) will meet in the Lecture Hall of the Oakton High School in
Vienna, Virginia. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. and is free and
open to the public. The meeting will feature a presentation entitled
"Migration Out Of Pennsylvania." The program will be presented by Elissa
Scalise Powell, CGSM
The lecture will help the audience to understand how you can find your
ancestors’ migration path out of Pennsylvania, the migration routes
leading out of Pennsylvania, the reasons for migrating, and the trails,
roads, railroads, rivers and canals that were used to migrate. In
summary, considering the trails and reasons why your migrating ancestors
left Pennsylvania will give you some clues as to where you might search
for their origins there.
Elissa Powell is the Professional Genealogy Course Coordinator at the
Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research at Stamford University;
BCG Booth Coordinator; Western PA Genealogical Society Book Review
Editor. She was an APG Director, past-president of two societies,

emphasis on Pennsylvania courthouses, which have some unique terms and
an indexing system that may not be familiar to every researcher. This
lecture will help the attendee gain a better understanding of those
terms, the Russell Index System, and the types of records contained in
the three major offices in every Pennsylvania Courthouse: the Recorder
of Deeds, the Register of Wills, and the Prothonotary, and how to
navigate those offices.
