Maureen Taylor is perhaps best known for her many Photo Detective
publications and columns. However, in 1995, the Rhode Island
Genealogical Society awarded Maureen their Jacobus Award for best new
book on Rhode Island Genealogy, "Runaways, Deserters, and Notorious
Villains from Rhode Island Newspapers", the first of two volumes
available from Picton Press (http://www.pictonpress.com/store/show/965,
http://www.pictonpress.com/store/show/899).
"In those days", Maureen spent countless hours scrolling through every
page of Rhode Island newspapers on microfilm from 1732-1800,
meticulously abstracting the material to create such invaluable
resources for Rhode Island researchers.
Today, everyone has the opportunity to access this type of information
across the entire US in online digitized newspapers.
The ads for these " lost" people include a wealth of fascinating detail
on the lives, clothing, ages, marital status, and "moral" conditions of
many people who otherwise are unknown. Most people included in these
categories do not appear in census, tax, or vital records - in many
cases these ads provide what few details of their lives will ever be known.
For example, Revolutionary War deserter notices often include age,
physical description, and place of birth or enlistment.

The format is easy to follow. Each teleconference session begins with
the "housekeeping": introducing our experts and topics. Then all
registrants will be muted while our experts provide a short segment of
the teleconference topic. After each segment, a Q&A session will be
opened up where everyone can ask questions and have a conversation about
their particular interests with our expert.
