“Sneak Preview: The Center for Jewish History's Dynamic New Web Site and
Online Catalog”
To be presented at Jewish Genealogical Society meeting on Sunday, March 19,
2006, at 2:00 PM.
Robert Friedman will walk the audience through the Center for Jewish
History's redesigned, user-friendly web site and provide a guided tour of
powerful new search features that unlock the Center's hidden treasures. The
program will be held at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street,
Manhattan (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). There is a $3.00 admission
charge. Subway: 4, 5, 6, L, N, R to Union Square; F, V, L to 14th Street &
Sixth Avenue.
The Center for Jewish History (CJH) opened in 2000 as the common home to
five outstanding research and cultural institutions: American Jewish
Historical Society, American Sephardi Foundation, Leo Baeck Institute,
Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Uniting
collections representing the entire Diaspora in one building was a
tremendous boon to academic researchers and genealogists alike.
Until now, however, anyone interested in finding relevant books and
manuscripts at CJH has had to negotiate three separate online catalogs,
several different card catalogs, and hundreds of printed finding aids. After
years of intensive development, CJH is on the verge of launching an
integrated, online search engine that will provide comprehensive access to
all collections from a single, web-accessible interface.
This powerful new tool will be prominently featured on CJH's new web site
www.cjh.org. Every web page was re-designed from the ground up to be
attractive to a broad audience -- engaging, easy to understand, and simple
to navigate.
Robert Friedman is Director of the Genealogy Institute at the Center for
Jewish History. While earning his Master's degree in Library and Information
Science, he served on the Executive Council of the Jewish Genealogical
Society, volunteered at the Museum of Jewish Heritage library, and worked as
a YIVO Archives intern. He has participated in several international
genealogy projects, teaches genealogy workshops throughout the year, and
speaks frequently at synagogues, Jewish community centers, public libraries,
and genealogical society meetings.
The Jewish Genealogical Society hosts monthly programs held at the Center
for Jewish History. Members of the public are invited to attend these events
and to join the organization, which was founded in 1977. For further
information call 212-294-8326 or visit www.jgsny.org.
