FREE GENEALOGY WORKSHOP - Springfield, Colorado

The Fort William Bent Chapter NSDAR will be hosting FREE GENEALOGY WORKSHOPS every Tuesday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning September 27, 2005.

The workshops will be held at the Baca County Museum in the Resource Center, 1260 Main Street, Springfield, Colorado. Several on-line data bases are available and a variety of "trees" and other useful forms will be available at no cost. DAR volunteer genealogists will be available throughout the afternoon to assist beginners or advanced researchers.

The Baca County Museum has an extensive local history collection which includes Baca County newspapers from 1905. A private collection of Homestead records for Baca, Bent, Las Animas, Otero and Prowers counties will be available. These records are indexed and microfilm of the original tract books will be available for more extensive research.

Native American Census and/or Roll records will be available on-site. This private collection includes final rolls of the five civilized tribes (Cherokee, Choctaw, Mississippi Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw and Seminole.) Tribal records for other Oklahoma tribes include: Otoe, Pawnee, Ponca, Tonkawa (1928 & 1929), Kaw (1929), Apache, Caddo, Kiowa, Wichita (1900 - 1904), Cheyenne (1895-1900) and Comanche (1900-1903).

Tribal census records for the Nez Perce (Idaho) 1890-1893 & 1899 and Devil's Lake Sioux (North Dakota) 1898-1902 will also be available.

Colorado and California mining claims 1866-1903 (-partially indexed) will be available.

Membership in DAR is not required - EVERYONE is invited to attend.
