For those researching slave ancestors and those who enjoy the value of
helping others research, Edith Smith, and her daughter, Vivian Lehman will
be discussing how to do slave research. Edith and Vivian recently completed
their ninth volume in a series entitled No Land.Only Slaves which they
abstracted from the deed records of the Ark-La-Tx region this year.

Mrs. Smith, a retired teacher, is a member of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, and has also published Index to the Biographical Section of
Fannin County Folks and Facts and Some of the Descendants of Samuel Cross,
Innkeeper and Planter. Edith will discuss the value of delving into obscure
records found in the county clerk's office with clues about abstracting the
important details which she calls "Finding Gold in Your Old Pocketbook".

Vivian Lehman currently works for the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of
the Census, Field Division in Dallas, Texas. She has published Some Smiths
of North East Alabama and North West Georgia. Vivian will be discussing
"Slave laws of the Ark-La-Tx" and how they apply to research in those
states.
