Genealogical Workshop - Finding People from the Civil War
from Resources in and Around Frederick County
On Friday, January 23, 2004, the Frederick County Genealogical Society is
sponsoring a historical and genealogical workshop to further the education of
research skills of historians and genealogists when concerned with the Civil
War. Both military and civilian information sources will be covered during this
one-day concentrated session. Speakers will include two archivists from the two
principal resources for Civil War records.
Mr. Jay Graybeal, Photo Archivist, will discuss research opportunities at the

military uniforms, insignia and accouterments and has researched the service

Washington, DC - Old Military Records Division - will discuss the resources at our
nation's largest records storage facility and how to find Civil War veterans
and other people who were affected by the war.
Mr. Plante specializes in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century military
records. He is an active lecturer at the National Archives and a frequent
contributor to "Genealogy Notes" which appears in the National Archives Quarterly
Journal PROLOGUE. Some of his published genealogy articles include "The Shady
Side of the Family Tree: Civil War Union Court-Martial Case Files," Prologue
(Winter 1998);"U.S. Marines in the Boxer Rebellion," Prologue (Winter 1999); "An
Overview of Records at the National Archives Relating to Military Service,"
Prologue (Fall 2002); and most recently, "Enhancing Your Family Tree with Civil
War Maps," Prologue (Summer 2003). He is a member of the Society for Military
