Speaker: Barbara Butler Rust

Program: "Bureau of Indian Affairs Records at the National Archives-SW
Region"

Guest speaker, Barbara Butler Rust's program will cover records that
were created by Indian agencies in Indian/Oklahoma territories and the
state of Oklahoma, from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth
century. The bulk of the files relate to the Five Civilized Tribes
(Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole), but the western
Oklahoma tribes will be discussed briefly. The allotment in severalty
process, tribal enrollment, trust lands and funds, and heirship/probate
records for tribal members will also be covered.

Ms. Rust has a B.A. in government, as well as, a M.P.A. in public
administration. She is a certified archivist and a certified records
manager. She has been the Archivist in the National Archives
Records and Administration-Southwest Region at Fort Worth since 1976. She
has conducted workshops on naturalization and Indian records for numerous
genealogical and historical societies in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and
Arkansas.

The NARA facility has extensive microfilm holdings that are of value for
genealogy research. This will be a great opportunity to learn about their
Native American records as well as their many other records.

Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the
Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet.
Lawrence Oliver will present a program on "Shooting Ghosts-Photographing
Tombstones".

East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are
Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. ETGS publishes
the East Texas Family Records four times a year and a monthly newsletter The
