Outstanding point, of which we all need to occassionally be reminded!
I'm sure that most of those people who happen to recognize that they
live near the person listing such cryptic msgs about events can manage
to find out the details; but there may be some who live not too far
(and don't realize it), or who may be traveling near or through the area
at the time and would see it if they knew enough about it, or who would
just think it's worth going out of their way to see...if they knew where
it was. Please, event posters, proofread your email before sending to
make sure your event announcements at least answer the basic, Who, What,
When, Where, How, and How Much, minimally including how to get more
info but also including, if you have it, any special information you
have about the schedule, things to bring, directions to the place, or
advice for someone new in town (such as if you are aware of any
particular road construction problems, or a couple of hotels in your
area).
Remember, your announcement is reaching people all over the world, and
we live in a rather mobile world now. (I myself live near Wheeling, WV.
In only the last four to six weeks I've come across someone in Iceland,
in Germany, in Ireland, in Hungary, in Japan and in Australia with
reason to research in this general area of WV, OH, PA and western MD.
Three of these people will be coming to the US on business within the
next 6 months and might want to arrange their schedule to attend a
genealogical event. The more complete details you can provide for
events, the easier you make it for anyone from anywhere to possibly
attend. The overall benefits of your one post could conceivably be
quite extensive.
