April Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society
Saturday, April 13, 2002
Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium
2:00 p.m.

Speaker: Kelvin Myers

Program: "All the News That's Fit to Print, (and a lot wasn't) 19th Century Secular and Religious Newspapers"

The Star, The Globe, The National Inquirer have nothing on the newspapers of the 19th century and the early 20th century. These papers left no stone unturned or any "juicy" story untold. The life of your ancestor and the lives of those people just like them can be traced in the newspaper. The denominational newspapers were also full of births, deaths, marriages and editorials on how you should vote and feel about every subject imaginable.

A professional genealogist for the last fifteen years, and an avid researcher-historian for last twenty-five years, Kelvin brings a great knowledge of social sciences, history, and genealogy to his work. The Dallas Public Library employed him for ten years in the Genealogy Department. Kelvin is currently employed by UT Southwestern Medical School, as the office manager for Medical Director of the Psychiatric Emergency Room at Parkland Hospital.

A native of Crosby County, he has published two books on his home county; deed abstracts and a compilation of records, including church, marriage, and census. For a spring of 2002 release, his third book will feature abstracts of the probate minutes. He is also abstracting the births, deaths, and marriages from the Semi-Weekly Farm News.

Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m. or so, the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Theresa Wentz will present a program on "1880 Census C/Ds".

East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. ETGS publishes the East Texas Family Records four times a year and a monthly newsletter The Bulletin.
