I have chosen to compile my book using two separate sections:
The first, PEOPLE. This is where I include things that are specific to an
individual.

The second, FAMILIES. This is where more common information about a core
family (mother, father, children) would appear. So each person may appear
in multiple families.

This has allowed me to quickly create new books by just adding the
people/families who belong to a particular line. Because I have used a
DIGITAL folder approach (various file on the PC), I can choose to include or
exclude those I want before I print a customized book for my family.

I have found that an Appendix is also valuable for general time/location
information.

I spend LOTS of thought working with the INDEX so that each individual is
correctly cross referenced when I print each book.

I don't make my ORIGINALs available to family (they are too valuable) but I
have a simular filing system for all other material in a growing/crowded
file cabinet at home.

Hope this helps.
