Subject: Question about Editor's "rights"
Date: Tue, 03 Nov 1998 23:12:01 -0600

Hi all,

I have a question which I hope you might share your thoughts on.

I collect data for a Gen. Soc. quarterly, type it up, proof read it, run
off a draft, and then give it to our Society's secretary to make copies
and mail it off. Since I've been doing this by myself since August of
1997, I assumed this would place me in the "Publisher/Editor" category.

For the October quarterly, our secretary asked me to send the quarterly
copy by email attachment (instead of paper), and she would get it copied
and mailed out. She did make copies but with her job responsibilities,
didn't have time to mail it out before she left town, so she asked me to
pick them up and send them out. No Problem there...

My problem is this....when I picked up the copies, I found that changes
had been made to the quarterly from my original file. While font
changes and re-formatting my pages doesn't really bother me, the headers
and page numbers weren't printed (why have a contents page or index? if
you don't number pages), the cover sheet had been changed and had year
info wrong, and census information had been added which I knew nothing
about with an "Editors" note stating that this would be continued in the
next quarterly. (I don't have this information personally... don't even
know for sure where it came from, so how can I as "Editor" guarantee
that it will be submitted for the next quarterly?)

I really don't want to offend or hurt this person's feelings, but I
can't make myself send these 45 copies out with all the mistakes and
additions which I didn't make, but will be credited with as "editor".
Add that to the frustration the members may already be feeling since
I've had the publication finished since the 2nd week of October and they
still haven't gotten a copy.....and I've got a mess.

Are there any comments or suggestions from other editors/publishers?

Sincerely,

A. Brown
