I've edited, and indexed, the Fletcher Family Research Bulletin for ten
years now, and have used a variety of indexing methods, including
spreadsheet software, index programs built into word processing
software, and actual indexing software. I recently purchased the
SkyIndex program and used it to index my 1997 issues. It is by far the
easiest method I've used.

Although SkyIndex requires re-typing each entry, I am a fast and
accurate typist and find that that method requires less time than
"selecting" entries in the actual text. This method also solves the
problem of what to do with pages which are submitted and published as is
and do not ever become part of my computer file.

A disadvantage is that retyping entries means there may be typographical
errors. This method, of course, can only be used after the text is in
its final position, as page numbers are not adjusted if text moves to
another page.

For the Fletcher newsletter, I produce three separate indexes: an index
of Fletcher given names, an index of surnames other than Fletcher, and a
locality index. SkyIndex is especially helpful in creating the locality
index.
