Subject: Re: Beware of Subscribers who steal..

I am sorry that you let a duplication of your newsletter, stop you. I have
felt the threat and dealt with it a little different.
1. I advertised heavier
2. Asked my subscribers for constructive criticism of our newsletter
3. Took much of the advice of my subscribers and made changes
4. Survived
There is room for all. You can specialize. Most people can afford more then
one subscription. You can cover regions, or cover certain types of material
only. You can use competition as a way to force you to look closer at your
publication and see if there is room for improvement.
What kinds of criticisms did I receive? What kind of changes did I make.
1. Switched to two column, which is easier to read.
2. Remove drawings and desk top publishing pictures
3. Margins 1.25 all the way around.
4. Remove newsy stuff and just have genealogy. They don't want to hear what
is happening today....they want to find their ancestors.
5. Stop making my own copies. Began using professional printers.
6. Convert to magazine style instead of letter style.
That is all I recall at the moment. I hope it helps you. It is a difficult
market but it is growing. Don't give up. Have fun with it.
