I recently bought a new book, "Producing a Quality Family History" by
Patricia Law Hatcher, CG. This book is directed at those writing a
compiled genealogy, but is very helpful for all gen. publishers. It was
written in 1996 and addresses many of the new issues such as desktop
publishing, indexing software etc. This book is well worth its $15
price tag.
There's an entire chapter on documenting sources, with examples. The
author refers readers to Elizabeth Shown Mill's "Citation and Analysis
for the Family Historian." I learned only recently that source citation
for genealogy has its own format, different from that used by academics.
For example, names are given in their natural order, and not last name
first.
The old classic, "Cite Your Sources" is now out of date (1980) and being
revised. It might be better to wait for the new edition of that.
To order Hatcher's book and see a list of other genealogical reference
materials available, go to http://www.genealogy.org/~ngs/ which is the
Nat. Gen. Society's web page. Click on Special Publications in the
section headed More About the NGS. This book may also be available at
Ancestry's homepage, as they are the publisher.
