Hi Alice,

This list was slow getting started, then busy for a while just before
the Maiser crashed, and then never got started again after it moved to
Root-L. I'm wondering if it's because it is now set to respond directly
to the sender and not to the list. (Pamela, if you're there, can that
be changed?)

I don't know about publising birth records -- laws vary state to state -
- but probably if they are public records you will have no trouble
publishing them. Your state library's archivist could tell you that.
The one law you really do have to watch out for is the copyright law.
You cannot publish more than a few lines from a copyrighted book or
other publication without the author's written consent. On the other
hand, no one can stop you from publishing public records.

Tell us where you are and about your group. What kind of things are you
thinking of publishing? If you have many out-of-town members (or would
like to have) publishing hard to find records, such as chancery files or
probate records (not wills, but the records of division of assets,
especially in intestate cases) might gain you many subscribers. Also,
having someone do oral histories (interviews) with some of the older
people in the community about old families and "the good old days" would
be fun.

Be sure that your new newsletter is advertised on your county's USgenweb
page.
