Pat,
We've thought of you and your family every day since Julian looked in
danger -- they are trying to protect all of the historic buildings and the
apple industry.
The California firefighters are working as hard as they can to keep all of
the areas safe -- a few have lost their lives doing it. This is a HUGE
fire -- bigger than any of us have ever experienced. San Diego County
hasn't had as much experience with wild fire as the Los Angeles Basin has,
so things have not gone as smoothly as one would have expected -- but
they're doing darn well and that's also thanks to all the fire personnel
from neighboring states. These out-of-staters are enabling the whole of
Southern California to do as well as possible in handling the fires!
We've had a high toll in human life as well as buildings (and probably
agriculture as well - we're a very agricultural state) . . . but they are
trying, hard. So far we, personally, haven't lost relatives or friends,
but some may have lost their homes -- we haven't had confirmation yet on
some that we have suspected to be lost.
If it's at all possible, Julian and a few other historic, and well loved
places will be saved. We don't look forward to the next result of the
fires: the rains and what they do. It'll be a trying fall and winter --
probably spring as well.
