Coal Mountain is the hill that Hwy 369 cuts at the Richard Neville Bridge at
Six Mile Creek. see 1839 map

It appears that when George Kellogg had the post office in that area, where
he lived (near present Ebenezer Church), they named the post office that
(some say because there was a coal deposit in the hill).

As the postoffice changed from Postmaster to Postmaster, it migrated further
west to its current position. Watch its position in regard to the creeks.

The current community appears to have taken its name from the Post Office.
