D. J. FUSSELL
Written for Enquirer-Sun June 20, 1907.
Cusseta is in mourning over the tragic death of one of her oldest and most
honored citizens, Judge David J. Fussell who died this morning about seven o'clock.
Judge Fussell seemed to be in his usual health and arose early to drive out
to Halloca bridge across Ochillee Creek to ascertain the nature and amount of
needed repairs. He was accopanied by Sheriff R. I. Barberee and they had planned
to spend a few hours fishng. They had not begun to fish when the judge was
stricken with apoplexy and fell into the water.
Mr. Barberee sprang in to rescue him, but he breathed only two or three
times after being rescued. Judge Fussell was sixty years old and was a citizen
of Chattahoochee County practically all his life; and a very useful citizen he
was, having served as Justice of Peace very efficiently for about thirty years.
He represented his county in General Assembly 1903 to 1906 and was then
elected to office of ordinary, which office he was filling very satisfactorily
to the public when death removed him.
He served not only his country and town with conspicuous ability, but for
many years had been recognized as a leader in church and benevolent work. He was
an official member of the Methodist Church. There is hardly a phase of the
community's interests that will not miss his wise counsel and helping hand.
