My grandfather said that the way they tried to judge the sex of an unborn
baby was to dangle a needle from some thread over the wrist of the mother to
be, and this I forget, but if it went clock wise it meant it was a boy, and
counter clockwise it was a girl, or in reverse. If it went back and forth
this meant the girl was not expecting.
