- 1545: King Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose, sunk at Portsmouth.
- 1553: After wearing the crown for only nine days, 15-year-old
Lady Jane Grey was deposed as Queen of England and King Henry
VIII's daughter Mary was proclaimed Queen.
- 1848: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia C. Mott held a women's
rights convention where they introduced loose fitting trousers
called bloomers.
- 1866: Tennessee became the first state to ratify the 14th
Amendment, guaranteeing civil rights.
- 1867: Congress passed the third Reconstruction Act over President
Andrew Johnson's veto.
- 1877: The first Wimbledon tennis match championship was held.
- 1899: The National Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was formed.
- 1939: Dr. Roy P. Scholz became the first surgeon to use
fiberglass sutures.
- 1940: Adolf Hitler told England to surrender.
- 1941: The first Army flying school for blacks was dedicated in
Tuskegee, Ala.; British Prime Minister Winston Churchill introduced
a two-finger "V" for victory sign.
- 1942: "The Seventh Symphony" by Shastakovich was performed for the
first time by Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
- 1945: The USS Cod saved 51 sailors from a Dutch submarine in the
only submarine-to-submarine rescue.
- 1969: Apollo 11 and its astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz"
Aldrin and Michael Collins began orbiting the moon.
- 1984: Lynn Rippelmeyer became the first female airline captain
to fly a 747 across the Atlantic Ocean.
- 1985: High-school teacher Christa McAuliffe of New Hampshire was
chosen to be the first schoolteacher to ride on the space shuttle.
