- 1608: Samuel de Champlain founded the city of Quebec.
- 1775: Gen. George Washington was named commander of the Continental
Army.
- 1806: The first strawberry was grown by Michael Keens.
- 1819: The first U.S. savings bank opened in New York City.
- 1853: Commodore Matthew Perry reached Japan.
- 1861: The Pony Express arrived in San Francisco from New York.
- 1863: The Battle of Gettysburg ended in a victory for the North.
- 1886: In Germany, Karl Benz drove the first automobile.
- 1890: Idaho became the 43rd state.
- 1898: American troops captured deserted Wake Island; the U.S. Navy
defeated a Spanish fleet in Santiago, Cuba, in the Spanish-American
War.
- 1929: Dunlop Latex Development Laboratories made foam rubber.
- 1930: Congress formed the Veterans Administration.
- 1962: Algeria gained its independence from France.
