- 1200: In China, sunglasses were invented.
- 1656: The Quakers first arrived in Boston.
- 1776: The first vote on adopting the Declaration of Independence
was held.
- 1862: Federal taxes were levied on inheritances, tobacco and
incomes over $600; President Lincoln signed income tax into law.
- 1863: Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee launched the attack at the
Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War.
- 1874: The first U.S. zoo opened in Philadelphia.
- 1877: The Wimbledon tennis games were first held in London.
- 1907: The world's first air force was established with the
formation of the Aeronautical Division of the Office of the Chief
Signal Officer of the U.S. army.
- 1916: Coca-Cola began marketing its Coke formula.
- 1944: The Bretton Woods Conference began under the auspices of
the U.N. to formulate post-war international monetary policy.
- 1946: The U.S. tested its atomic bomb over the Bikini Atoll in
the Pacific.
- 1950: The first U.S. forces landed in Korea.
- 1963: The Post Office introduced ZIP codes.
- 1968: The U.S., Great Britain, the Soviet Union and 58 other
countries signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
- 1971: The state of Washington became the first state to ban sex
discrimination.
