I am one of the lucky ones, who has received gedcoms from related people (found via the internet) with their sources enclosed, this has of course saved me immense time, as the sources are censuses and parish Registers, so I can verify them for my own satisfaction if I wish, or obtain copies of the sources for my own records. for this I am eternally grateful to those people, In return, I share ALL information that I find on that particular line, and forward copies of any other documents that I have found, to save them looking them up, I personally feel that this shows that I not only appreciated their sharing with me, but also that I am recipriocating the same.
When asking ofr information, I always give them the easy option of saying no, and that I don't mind (bg) but would they be so kind as to point me in the right direction.
I can understand that some people feel that sharing the hours of research that they have done is not why they did the research, but the whole point of family history is the recording for future generations, and IMHO, the generations currently researching the same lines.
Just my thoughts, on sharing, so who wants this immense pile of paper I have taking up floor space?
Privacy and copyright are difficult subjects, but generally I would think that the rule of thumb is to ask nicely for permission. I have entered an ancestors name (smae as my fathers) and found my father, and indeed myself lurking on Ancestry.com, I didn't know I was going to be there, and not all of the information was correct, if I had been asked, I would have provided up-to-date info, and requested some of the living be put as "Living" as they are not overjoyed that I am researching in the first place.
