Could I commend to all the work being done by the FREECEN project which aims
to put all of the English census material onto the Internet so that
genealogists can do their own lookups. The work for this project is being
done by volunteers. As the newly 'volunteered' Australian co-coordinator for
the Cambridgeshire portion of this project, I will soon be calling for
volunteers to help.
This project is being (morally) supported by the CFHS - see the last online
newsletter.
Have a look at the web site http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ to see the current
state of this mammoth work. Perhaps you might like to volunteers for another
county while you are waiting for Cambridgeshire to get up and running.
Cheers

Many of you may remember my moans and groans about "free" look-ups from
transcriptions done by volunteers. Just to reinforce my point, this article
appeared in the CFHS newsletter this month concerning documents to be
auction:
The description of the documents was "23 documents dated 1614 - 1667
relating to DULLINGHAM MANOR, CAMBRIDGE dealing with the affairs of Thomas
Appleyard, John Appleyard and other members of the Appleyard family also
Alice Cornwall, Henricus Cornell and others mainly in latin most on
calfskin vellum a few on parchment."
In the eventual bidding we won through and the documents are now on in the
Cambridge Record Office
These documents could easily have been lost into a private collection. So
keep up the good work CFHS and everybody else remember you are investing in
the future of our hobby(!) every time you purchase one of those fiche!
