Hi Andy

It's probably worth checking the 1841/51 Bradford censuses to see whether
there is another William and Nancy, although the occupation appears to be
consistent with it being the same person.

I suspect that the vicar knew they were unmarried at the time of the
children's baptism, and brought pressure on them to marry.
Maybe he would not marry them because William had not been baptised into the
C of E (or any other religion?).
The delay of 3 weeks after William's baptism was probably for the banns to
be read out.

I have read about this happening but haven’t come across it in Bradford
before. Many of my ancestors were nonconformists who appear to have married
in Bradford/Halifax without any problem.
Could the vicar have had a thing about a Roman Catholic marrying a C of E,
or could they have been married in a RC church previously (probably not
recognised by the C of E) and were changing allegiance?

Regards John

Subject: [ BRAD] CLAPHAM/SPURR

Hello List.

Whilst the list is in reflective mode, could I seek ideas/inspiration?

My 2x gt grandfather James CLAPHAM was an iron moulder in Cleckheaton in
1841 and 1851 before moving to Huddersfield in 1871/81.

On 4th April 1834 he was baptised at Bradford Cathedral, along with his
sister and **father**!

#38 William to William and Sarah CLAPHAM of Bradford b. 18 Aug 1793
#39 James to William and Nancy CLAPHAM of Cleckheaton, forgeman, b. 20 Nov
1827
#40 Mary Ann to William and Nancy CLAPHAM of Cleckheaton, forgeman, b. ??
Nov 1833

The other siblings were baptised in October 1834 - all to William and Nancy
as above.

But on 28th April 1834 (3+ weeks after his baptism) in Bradford again,
William CLAPHAM, forgeman married Nancy SPURR botp wit. William CLAPHAM and
Samuel CLAPHAM.

There seem to me to be 2 possibilities:
1) William and Nancy finally decided to make things legal.
2) William was marrying a second time, to a second Nancy.

Has anyone any ideas on where to go next?

BW Andy.
