I visited Wisbech in 2000, and went to the Wisbech and Fenland Museum.
They gave me a map of the place from the 1800s. One of the questions I
later asked by email was when the canal vanished - as it appeared I had
driven over it on the way in! They said 1960s as by then the canal had
become a rubbish diump in effect. By the way, my gg grandmother's
brother lived at 5 Ruby St. It has vanished too, and I was told there
may be just the odd brick or two about opposite where we swung out round
Blackfriars onto the main road - but over the far side. It was probably
a new house when uncle moved in in the 1840s maybe 1850s.

All the best

Dear Listers
I have an old map of Wisbech and have found reference to
Trafalgar Row. It was a row of cottages that ran along the route of the
old canal
which is now called Churchhill Rd.
To position its location on a new map find Churchill Rd., then find a
street
called St. Augustines Rd.that runs parallel to Churchill Rd. on the
bend
towards the river. Trafalgar Row consisted of about thirty cottages that
were
along the same side of the canal as St. Augustines Rd and ran along the
side of
the canal facing the water. The length of Trafalgar Row was approx. the
same
length as St. Augustines Rd. Just to complicate matters St. Augustines
Rd. was
previously called Monica Rd and Agenoria Str. I lived in Agenoria Str.
for the
first six years of my life. I have been into Wisbech today and checked
all
these facts with the locals. I had lunch in the New Blackfriars Pub
which is now
where Trafalgar Row was Knocked down. The canal and the cottages were
still
there in the 1950's. I believe the transformation of this area took
place in the
early 1960's. Hope this helps .
