Hi Barbara,
You are correct. Earlier this summer, I posted the information that I
found some record showing the Liverpool Sheltering Homes was on Circus
Street. I think the agreement turned out to be that it was on the corner
of Byrom Street and Circus Street, so census-takers might have used either
street.
Also, the "Home" opened on Byrom Street in .. 1873.. My ancestors and
their siblings probably went to live there in 1873. And, in the spring
and summer of 1874 they were "shipped to Canada." Each went to a
different home in Nova Scotia, and each was listed in the NAC / BHC data
base as coming from "Byrow Hall" which was a mistake.
Also, don't forget that both "British Home Children" and "Home Children,
Canada" are "searchable" terms. If you do a Google search, using quotes,
you will find web sites on the subject. The BHC web site originated and
maintained by Dr. Perry SNOW in Canada has its own BHC data base.
...
Also, while I am writing, I'd like to thank all the researchers, again, for
providing me with the information on my great-grandfather's LEWIS family.
After searching for
4 years, I was able to find out that my great-great-grandfather, John LEWIS,
of the Toxteth Park and West Derby areas was one of ..4.. sons of Richard
and Elizabeth LEWIS. The 1851 Census showed the sons as:
William LEWIS, 18
John LEWIS, 14
Henry LEWIS, 8
Richard LEWIS, 3
And, the 1881 Census has William and Sarah LEWIS with 7 children So, my
great-grandfather's cousins were: Richard, Sarah, William, Elizabeth,
Nancy, Emily, and Edward, and they were living in West Derby, some 7 years
after he left England.
And the 1881 Census has Henry and Harriet LEWIS with 4 children. So, my
great-grandfather had more cousins: Henry, Ernest, Albert, and Frank.
And, the 1881 Census has Richard and Elizabeth LEWIS with 5 children.
So,
my great-grandfather had more cousins: Ellen and Henry (twins), Charles,
Arthur, and Percy.
I continue to try to find out whether John and Isabella LEWIS had more
children during the 1860's. The 1861 Census only listed their son, John
"Stanley" LEWIS.
Three LEWIS girls were on the ship with "Stanley," and I would like to find
out if they were his sisters.
...
Another researcher found my great-grandmother's family in Liverpool in the
1871 Census: Evan and Elizabeth CORKILL were in St. Michael's Parish
with their 5 children: Mary, Julia, Esther, John, and Robert. (In
1873 the children went to the Liverpool Sheltering Homes.) (Evan
remarried a few years later and lived many years after his children were
"shipped to Canada.")
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
Notes: Richard LEWIS, my gr-gr-grandfather was born in ..Shrewsbury..
probably around 1803.
His wife, Elizabeth ____, was born in CHS, Heswell.
(?)
The maiden name of John LEWIS' wife was Isabella BURROWS.
