Like many others on the list I have come across this problem on marriage certs of grandparents grt gr grandparents mid to end 1800's and through research found that the male being a seaman was lodging with the family having somehow already met. For instance my grandparents, my grandfather being a master met another master on one of his journeys wherever got talking and discovered that both had master mariners as fathers both originated from Wexford Ireland ( but neither knew each others family or were related ) my grandfathers family by now had settled in the Us and while docked in L'pool had to find somewhere to lay his head. His new found friend invited my grandfather to stay with them and to also stay whenever in the pool, consequently my grandfather subsequently married the daughter of the house. Mind you its a relief because they were all very strong catholics and very victorian in their ways, so I was begining to worry about them all. Just shows you how we can jump to!
the wrong conclusions.
