Hello Everybody,
As the list is so quiet I thought the following might be interesting.
I suspect you all know that West Meon was at the heart of 'Earwaker land' so
I thought the following extract from an old edition of the Hampshire
Chronicle newspaper would be interesting to the list members.
"The Jubilee of West Meon Church 1896.
Foundation Stone laid 9th August 1843 by Archdeacon H.V.Bayley.
Built by Messrs Lewis of West Meon and was consecrated by Bishop Sumner of
Winchester on the 5th May 1846, cost £13,000 of which sum £12,000 was given
by H.V.B. It replaced a 15th century church which stood (it is said) about
forty yards lower down the hillside. It is also noted that the gravestones
of the Earwaker family (of East End House) stood along the East wall of the
old Church, and have not been moved.....In the speeches made on that day,
Canon Benham recounted how it was said that there 10 families of Earwakers
in the village and that they were not related!!
The first name in the 1588 Church Register was John Earwaker"
