Hello Alan and Listsand Louisa in New Zealand..
Louisa recently sent a mail concerning her ancestry which she has got back to London.
In 1881 census her family is at 220 Kimberworth Road, York.
The family makeup is :-
Charles H Earwaker, head,a welder and boiler maker, married, aged 25, birthplace Datchet, Buckingham.
His wife is Sarah E. Earwaker, aged 25, born in Gloucester.
There are three children, Beatrice A.Earwaker, aged 3, Mary J.Earwaker, aged 1 and Charles H.Earwaker aged 2 months, all the children have birthplace recorded as Masboro, York.
Also at the address is Charles' father, Charles Earwaker, widower, a general blacksmith, aged 54, birthplace being shown as Gound, Hampshire. There are also shown at the address three more sons of Charles, senior, being Walter Earwaker, unmarried, a trailer away in Wire Mill, aged 15, with birthplace shown as Thrapstone, Northamptonshire, Frederick Earwaker, same occupation, aged 13, birthplace recorded as London, Middlesex, and Edwin Earwaker, a scholar, aged 10, with same birthplace as Frederick.
The reference to Gound as a birthplace would appear to be a transcription error as there is no place of that name in Hampshire. There is a Hound just east of Southampton but there do not appear to be any Earwakers there till 1840s.
My suspicion is that it might be Rowner, part of Gosport, which is immediately west of Portsmouth, with part of Portsmouth Harbour between the two locations.
There was a Charles Ebenezer Earwicker baptized at Portsea St John, Portsmouth, in 1822, the son of Charles Earwicker and Ann Bowyer, who were married at Alverstoke, Gosport, in 1813, Charles Ebenezer does not appear in 1851 census for Hampshire. and I wonder if he was the father in 1881 census.
Perhaps a list member who is going to visit the Family Records Centre in London in the near future would be able to check the film copy of the York family and see whether Gound is really what is on the film.
Hopefully, this information will be helpful to Louisa.
Could I add to this message that the West Meon Millennium Book is now sold out of stock but I am quite happy to look up anything in my copy that may be queried by list members
From Rodney Whale, Andover, Hampshire.
