This is Rodney WHALE.
You will recall we corresponded last year following your letter to my wife,
yet another EARWAKER descendant.I have only recently joined your mailing
list having more or less got the hang of my new computer.
Firstly may I congratulate you on setting up the group, it is a super method
of contact and of being able to offer assistance when possible. May I also
say how much I was impressed by the website and also your contribution to
the Hampshire (Lists and) Villages webpages. The list might be interested to
know that I have the whole 1851 census for Hampshire as well as the National
one for 1881. I also have details of all pre 1858 wills for Hampshire,
details of all existing Hampshire marriage licences from 1689 to 1837, plus
my own copies of fiches of Privett and West Meon Parish Registers. I am
always willing to help anybody with any query if I am able to do so.
Tomorrow Beryl and I are going to Alton to attend a regional seminar
organised by GOONS. If you have any specific queries about the organisation
and can get them to me tonight I will try and get answers.
Can I turn to the query about the Antiques Roadshow last Sunday. I have it
on tape and the item concerned was a Damascan cigarette case which had the
mark of Komah on it, he according to the expert being a Japanese maker of
fine quality gold and silver inlay. I think the man who had taken it for
examination was an EARWAKER because he said it had been purchased by his
father who had been a member of the Royal Naval air mission that had been to
Japan in 1922/3 repairing wooden planes. There was a receipt with the case
dated 8th December 1923 from O.Komai and was made out to W.A.EARWAKER. The
expert valued the item at 800 GBpounds to 1000 GBpounds. The owner was aged
about 65 and bearded and that part of the programme had been recorded in
Birmingham.
I am pleased you have taken up my suggestion to try and get a copy of the
book West Meon- Some Chapters in its History. You will have noticed on page
19 the reference to the EARWAKER tomb. Over recent years Beryl and I have
spent a lot of time trying to find traces of it but have failed.
You posted a query re the location in Hampshire of your ggGrandfather James
(born 1809). I suspect from our phone conversation that he was then in
London? bearing in mind your Hampshire connection, is there a chance it
could COSham or FAREham?
There was a message 8th February from Colin EARWAKER who appears to be in
the north of England. Could I mention that a John EARWAKER migrated from
West Meon in 1800's to Manchester where he became a prosperous cotton
manufacturer and was the father of John Parsons EARWAKER (1847 to 1895) who
was an eminent genealogist of Lancashire and Cheshire families. The
Manchester Family History Society gives an annual prize to the author of the
best article published in the Manchester Genealogist. Perhaps Colin connects
with that branch of the family?
On 7th February there was a message from Benjamin SKEATES in which he gave
details of some Hampshire 1851 census entries. The Nicholas who was at
Crawley is one on my wife's line and we have photographs of him and his
wife. I don't know what Susan who raised the original query was asking as it
was before I joined your list. Parents of Nicholas were James EARWAKER and
Ann WEBB. The WIELD family with head being John EARWAKER were part of the
prosperous farming part of the family and one of the commemorative pictures
in the village church is in memory of John Mabberly(Sic?) EARWAKER, a very
devout churchman who was churchwarden for 37 years who died in 1917 and was
a considerable farmer. He lived at Wield House. Benjamin, in his message,
mentioned a Nicholas in Alton, who was aged 22. I have never yet found his
origin and I suspect he may be another entry for the first one mentioned.
The census film for Alton shows him as a visitor at the White Horse in Alton
High Street. I think Benjamin got his information from H.G.S. transcript of
the census. The transcript appears wrong in relation to John aged 43 because
when the film is examined the original age has been crossed out and 35 has
been written above it.
