Ethel,
You assumption is correct, but part of the marriage record should be
read as 'thans in Garnisoen', which means his regiment was stationed
there (and he met her :)
The early service records are in 'stamboeken' in the Algemeen
Rijksarchief (national archives) in The Hague. Please note contracts in
the military may vary, but most are six year periods (and sometimes
repeated). For the time frame 1773 - 1795 they have fewer 'stamboeken'
in their collection, but 'conduite-, rangeer- en recrutenlijsten' may be
supplemental.
You may read some general info at

My ancestors, Laurens Van Wyck and Catharina Fouser were married in the
Ouddorp, Netherlands Church on 17 January 1799. Marriage record is a
two
page document with many signatures and with my very limited Dutch, it
states
Laurens was born in Woerden and Catharina was born in Ouddorp. [Laurens
was
baptized on 9 Sept 1770 in the Woerden Church and Catharina was baptized
on 1
Oct 1775 in the Ouddorp Church.] Can someone tell me what the following
means. Looks like....Laurens van wijk,...Bombadier in De 2 Comp van 2
Battaillon Artilleri....thans is Gaindsoen alhier. I'm assuming he was a
soldier and he fired a cannon. How can I obtain his service record.
I
need a history lesson. What was it like in the Netherlands in 1799.
