Here is Johannes VERVEELEN, the immigrant. He and his son, Daniel, who m.
Alida SCHAETS, the daughter of my ancestor, Domine Gideon SCHAETS, minister
of Albany, are the ancestors of the American VERVEELEN, Van VALEN, Van
VALER, etc. families.

1. Johannes VERVEELEN, b. 1616, Amsterdam; d. 1700, Westchester, NY; m.
1637, Amsterdam, Anna Jaarsvelt. His ancestors were from Cologne, where his
g-f, Hans Verveelen and family removed ca. 1610, to Amsterdam, to escape the
oppression of the Calvinists at Cologne. Immigrant to America. Apr 24,
1657, enrolled as Burgher, New Amsterdam, joined NADRC. House and lot on
the Marckvelt-Steeg, from John La Montagne, Jr., Jun 17, 1659. Nominated
Schepen, 1660, lost. Moved to Haarlem, 1661, one of oiginal patentees, and
last survivor. Magistrate, 1663. Delegate, General Assembly, 1664.
Acquired considerable property from Jan Pietersen Slot and Juriaen Hansel in
1664. Brewer, with Isaac de Forest. Constable, May 5, 1666 at Harlem. One
of Gov Nicholls' 5 Patentees of (New) Harlem, Oct 19, 1667. Ran the Ferry
at New Harlem (at 125th Streetand Harlem River), in the 1660's, (right
renewed 1669-1680), along with Harlem Inn (the first inn in Harlem). Second
ferry at Spuyten Duyvil at Kingsbridge Road, Feb 27, 1669.Was often in
trouble for ignoring excise laws, was granted a 1 year exemption.
