DIRECTORY OF NEW AMSTERDAM - 1656
INTRODUCTION: The list below is a "reconstructed" 1656 directory of New
Amsterdam. The data were compiled from maps and text in: J. H. Innes,
"New Amsterdam and Its People. Studies, Social and Topographical, of
the Town under Dutch and Early English Rule", 2 volumes (1902; reprint,
Ira J. Friedman, Inc., Port Washington, Long Island, N.Y., 1969). The
maps were drawn by Mr. Innes based on data from his research on New
Amsterdam property, probate and other records. The maps were apparently
highly reduced to be incorporated in the book, so some of the
handwritten information is difficult to read even with a hand lens.
Therefore, some of the spellings may be incorrect, though I tried to
check them all in the text. Innes relates the 1656 streets to streets
in New York City in 1902. I'm not familiar with 1999 streets in NYC, so
I've used Innes comparisons.
ORIENTATION for those without a map: At the confluence of the North
(Hudson) River, which runs north-south, and the East River, which runs
northeast-southwest, is the south-western tip on Manhattan Island, our
starting point. The most prominent man-made feature in 1656 was the
fort on the North River shore slightly north of the tip. Along the east
side of the fort was 't Marckveldt (1902 known as Whitehall Street)
running in an almost north-south direction. Intersecting 't Marckveldt
to the south of the fort and running west to the river shore was Perel
Straet.
Running north-easterly from 't Marckveldt was 't Water (1902, Pearl St.)
along the East River shore, and one block inland (north of 't Water) was
Brugh Straet (1902, Bridge St.) roughly parallel to 't Water. The next
street inland (two blocks from the East River) was Brouwer Straet (1902,
Stone St.) These three streets extended between 't Marckveldt and the
Graff or Ditch (1902, Broad St.), which extended inland in a northerly,
and slightly westerly, direction from the East River. Between Brugh and
Brouwer were two short streets, Winckel Straet, nearest the Marckveldt,
and Brugh Steegh, nearest the Ditch.
Passage across the Ditch was facilitated by a bridge located between
Brugh and Brouwer streets. On the eastern side of the Ditch, the street
names changed. One block in from the East River shore was Hoogh Straet
(1902, Stone St.) running north-east from the Ditch and eventually
converging with the river shore and becoming a more north-south route.
Two blocks inland was Slyck Steegh (1902, Mill Lane) which somewhat
paralleled Hoogh Straet. A few other short streets or lanes intersected
Hoogh Straet. These are noted in the property sequences below.
PROPORTION: The data cover the area from the North River shore to just
past the Ferry on the East River, roughly about 4,000 feet. The
distance from the North River to the Ditch is about 20% of the total.
The Palisades are in the middle of the area covered. The width of this
strip (inward from the East River) is about one tenth of its length.
