Subject: Henry Dundas(s) - Drung, Cavan, Ireland + Fermanagh Connection?
Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2000 17:45:58 -0400
Hi, Laura, Cathy, and everyone,
Have been trying to trace my own roots back to the family I believe Laura
(and perhaps others on the list) may be descended from. In the process have
collected some interesting information on Henry Dundas(s) and his wife,
Arabella Stevens Dundas of Cavan, Ireland. Further, know who their 12
children were and may have found an India connection to this family that
could, perhaps, link some of us who have India-travelling ancestors.
Finally, it's possible that this is the same Henry Dundas(s) mentioned
(twice, I think) in the Styles-Sanders' book (once as a "gentleman from
Dublin", again as a "Trinity graduate"). Here's what I know (some of this
is redundant from a Nov. 1999 post in which I inquired about the family --
some is new, thanks to Cathy Elliott! :)
According to a record found on Ancestry.Com: Henry Dundass, Esq. married
Arabella Stevens on May 11, 1771 in St. Anne's, Dublin.
Further, I believe this is the same Henry DUNDAS who is listed in "Alumni
Dublinenses" (A Register of the Students, Graduates, Professors, and
Provosts of Trinity College, in the University of Dublin) which states:
DUNDASS, HENRY, Pen. (Dr. Dunkin), July 9, 1766. B.A. AEST. 1771.
With regard to Arabella Stevens DUNDAS, recently found information
pertaining to her from the British Library's Online Manuscript Index -- many
thanks to Cathy Elliott for this link! http://molcat.bl.uk/msscat/INDEX.ASP
Dundas (Arabella) . widow of Rev. H. Dundas. Letter to Sir R. Peel 1818.
Given the above, Henry was not only an Esquire but a Reverend, as well.
(Family legend has it that one of our ancestors was an attorney who never
practiced.) Also, interesting that Arabella evidently signed her name on the
correspondence to Sir Rober Peel as "Dundas" rather than "Dundass." (Would
love to have a copy of this correspondence, however, microfilming and
mailing charges were quite expensive, if I calculated correctly).
Further, as an aside, also found a manuscript listed in the index for a
David Turkington, as follows:
Turkington (David) . Surveyor of Excise at Drogheda Memorial to Sir R.
Peel 1816.
The commonality of Arabella Dundas and David Turkington having each written
to, or on behalf of, Sir. Robt. Peel, might indicate my ancestor,
Henry D. Turkington Dundas, is a descendent of both Arabella and Henry
Dundas and David Turkington of County Louth.) Thank you again, Cathy!
As for the 12 children of Arabella & Henry DUNDASS -- the birth/baptismals,
according to the LDS site, took place in Drung, Cavan as follows:
http://www.familysearch.com/ ):
Anna Maria b.1-29-1772
Charlotte Dundas b.12-20-1772
Francis Henry Dundas b. 12-17-1773
Elizabeth Hannah Dundas b. 03-15-1775
Arabella Maria Dundas b. 10-30-1776
Henry Dundas b. 12-02-1777
Arabella Frances Dundas 10-22-1780
James Francis Dundas b. 09-22-1781
George William Dundas b. 01-27-1783
Anne Charlotte Dundas b. 10-16-1784
Robert Thomas Dundas b. 04-12-1786
Francis Dundas b. 09-20-1787
And as another aside, according to information received from the India-L
list some time ago, a Col. J.F Dundas was stationed in Bengal in 1837.
Wonder if this could be the James Francis Dundas listed above?
Coincidently, Henry D. Turkington DUNDAS was born in the East Indies in
1837. Sharryn and Loreen, could your ancestors descend from this line?
But, back to Laura's descendent, William George Dundas -- the given names
are reversed and the baptismal/birth date are different from the George
William Dundas listed above, however it was not uncommon for people to use
their middle names as their surnames. Further, the difference in
birth/Baptismal dates might be precisely that -- the date Laura has may be
his birth date and the LDS date a baptismal date. Or, perhaps the date at
LDS is a typo.
Laura's the first, I believe, to post with a possible CAVAN connection --
anyone else out there possibly a descendent of this Henry DUNDAS(S) ? Also,
any suggestions/ideas for further research gratefully accepted -- I
sometimes tend to overlook the obvious.
Sincerely,
Lisa
