DLD - List compiled for Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, of men imprisoned in
Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset and Devon. ) photocopy in SRO T/PH/wig.)
NL - Newsletter
PINNEY, Azariah, yeoman, a young married man, of Axminster, 'supposed' (CP)
got to London after Sedgemoor, arrested and sent to Dorchester for trial; at
first to be hanged at Bridport (Br); but then to be transported to Nipho
(JR.); his sister Hester paid £65 for a ransom (PP); 'taken out of my
custody, sent away to Bristol' (G. Penne on SL); his brother Nathaniel paid
his passage to Nevis, £5; clothes and other equipment, including a bible,
£15; and £15 to start him in Nevis (PP), where he set up as a factor. He
became a Lieutenant. His pardon was approved on 31 May 1687 (CSPD, J2, II,
1833) in the Defence Force, a Member of the Assembly, and Treasurer of the
Island. He visited England twice, dying in London in 1719 (University of
Bristol, Pinney Papers). He had been presented at Exeter and misreported
at large (JR).
The other PINNEYs involved were:-
PINNEY, Abraham of Trull, 'absent' (CP); hanged in Taunton on July 9 by Col.
Kirke (P); buried at St James as a 'rebel soldier' on July 10 (PR).
PINNEY, Alexander, at Wells Assize 'remaining in custody for want of
evidence' (JR).
PINNEY, George, of Chardstock, suspected guilty' (CP).
PINNEY, John of Chardstock, 'suspected guilty' (CP); tried at Dorchester;
transported for Booth (JR) on the 'Happy Return' from Weymouth, Sept. 25, to
Barbados; sold to Capt. George Terwight (SL).
PINNEY, John, of Wellington, 'absent' (CP).
PINNEY, Nathaniel, of Isle Abbots, son of the vicar, the Revd. Robert
Pinney. Local written tradition says 'involved in the Monmouth Rebellion.'
PINNEY, Robert, clothworker, of Thorncombe, imprisoned in Dorset (DLD);
tried at Dorchester, Sept 5; pleaded not guilty; hanged at Dorchester, Sept
7 (JR, NL)

No, Maggie, I have none of the details. Knew 65 pounds had been paid but
not by whom & did no know Nathaniel paid his passage tho figured some of the
family helped. Would appreciate the details & also the names of the other
Pinneys involved. Those names might help me connect to my other Pinneys.
