Subject: [DOR] LIST ADMIN - BADTRANS
Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 20:09:13 +0100
There are now at least three people on the list with Badtrans.
Albert's computer is still sending out virus attachments in response to all
unread emails. This has happened even though he has been unsubbed for
several days - if you look at the dates of the messages they all date back
to the time before he had unsubbed.
Albert has been in touch with me to apologise. He thought that he had
managed to clean his machine, but obviously he has not succeeded and I have
informed him of this. Please be
patient; it is not easy to remove the virus and not everyone finds it easy
to understand the removal instructions on virus sites. There is no point in
being abusive to him or reporting him to his ISP. Many of you have had
Batrans yourself so please be understanding.
I have also been informed that Badtrans has now changed the way it operates
and that it responds to any message left unopened in your in box for more
than 5 minutes. I have advised Albert to call in a computer expert to clear
him computer for him and also to mark all unread messages as read. Bearing
in mind that tomorrow is Sunday, it might take him a few days to get someone
to help him, so in the meantime just delete all messages from him. I am
doing all I can at this end - please help by ensuring that you don't catch
it by opening an attachment. Albert's address is
so be wary of anything from this address, or from Cathy Randall
.
The third person to catch the virus unsubbed themselves very, very quickly
and I have had no reports of it being spread via their computer.
Remember
DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS WHICH LOOK TO BE A REPLY TO A LIST MESSAGE.
DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS THAT YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING.
If your receive a message saying "TAKE A LOOK TO THE ATTACHMENT", delete it
immediately.
UPDATE YOUR VIRUS CHECKER TODAY AND ENSURE THAT IT IS SWITCHED ON
No need to kep informing me of virus attachments recieved - I can't keep up!
I will get any current ones back in reply to this message anyway.
I think someone on the list also has the HAHA/SNOWHITE VIRUS - many reports
which may possibly link it to the list, but I can't be sure. I have not
received one myself. When you update and run your virus checker today, you
will need to check that you are not spreading this.
