Hi Chuck and Grace,
I am married to a guy whose first name is Franz ... Austrian born and bred.
Many of his Austrian friends call him Franzl which, I think, is similar to
your question about Christofel.  What I've gathered over the years is that
Franzl is an endearing nickname.  Examples of other endearing
nicknames would be Hansl (for Hans), Fredl (for Fred), Seppl (for Sepp),
Peppl (for Peppi), Christl (for Christa), Grettl (for Gretta).  I think my
spelling is correct but I'm open to being corrected.  I've never heard of
Christofel but it sounds so similar to what I've explained above I wouldn't
be surprised if it is an endearing nickname for Christoph.
Hope this info is helpful.

Has anyone found the form "Christofel" before? I've found this in
research
sent to me by others. I wonder if it's a misinterpretation of handwriting
from whatever document the information was pulled from.

I have a few German first cousins and first, once removed, named
"Kristoph".
It sure beats the spelling of my ethnic German cousins in Poland:
"Krysztof" and "Krysztian" (Christian). My brother was
named "Christopher"
in this country, but in the excitement was abbreviated "Chris." His
name
appears on his birth certificate "CHRIS." including the period.
