Dear Mr Boer:
According to the latest edition of "The Dictionary of German Names", by
Hans Bahlow the following is listed;
Böer(Böder): Boder, appears in Kiel in 1394 (Middle Low German bodern
'to wash').
There is also a listing for Boer (without the umlaut). This is related
to many names; Bu(h)r, Bauer, Buhrmann, Buhrmester, see Burmeister
Burmeister,Burmester(Low German):frequent in Hamburg, Rostock etc.,
means town elder next to the magistrate, mayor. Godeke Burmeister (of
Kösterbek), appears in Rostock in 1265; as a family name it appears in
Rostock in 1279: H. Burmester bodiker [cooper]. In Bulstring 1455 it was
documented: H. Jorosse burmester and St. Husing schulte [mayor]
None of the citings relate at all to Schlesien. However, please keep in
mind that Bahlows book (although very comprehensive) is not the
definitive answer for understanding the roots of German family names. It
is only one reference.

GEB. 1824
Dear List:

My ancestors lived in the Kreis Schweidnitz...in Freiburg. Today,
Freiburg is named Swiebodzice. It is southeast of Breslau (Wroclau).
My great-grandfather emigrated to Texas in 1877. His name was August
Heinrich Böer. His wife's name was Hedwig (Hettie).
According to information I have gathered, the surname of Böer was
present in this area for many centuries. The name originally was a
general term referring to a subpopulation of the region near Mount
Zobten which settled there in the 12th century. These settlers were
farmer families out of Flanders. Locals called them "bjuren" or farmers
and from this the surname "Böer" was derived.
Anyone out there have any information on August Böer or the surname
"Böer"?
