My great-grandfather George COTTON was from Derby; he
had a wife Lucy, and they named their daughter Lucy
Elizabeth. When his wife died in childbirth, he
remarried, to my great-grandmother, Mary Jane, and
emigrated to the US. There, they had 5 children, the
youngest of whom they named Lucy Hortense.
The half-sisters were always referred to as 'big' Lucy
and 'little' Lucy. In their defense, 'big' Lucy did
not join them in the US until sometime later - I'm not
sure if it was before or after the birth of 'little'
Lucy....
