In answer to the query about civil weddings I have a Samuel HALLOWS who
married his daughter in law in the Bakewell Registry Office in 1858. Samuel
having lost his wife and son within 3 months in 1854, the resulting
marriage to his daughter in law being legal, I presume it still raised a
few eyebrows in the community as there was a large age difference and the
Registry Office was a good option for privacy and possibly a bit cheaper
than getting a licence for a church "do".
Best wishes Jean Durbin
