Hi Listers
I thought I'd sent this message to you yesterday, but it seems I sent it
only to myself. There is duplication of a message I sent earlier, for which
I apologise.
Back on 10 April I posted a message asking for any information that could be
found on Neils, Jensine, and Peter OLSEN. Well I've made some progress via
the Sweden List, so if I can share this with you perhaps it would help
someone to come forward with new information. I'm indebted to several people
on the Sweden List for the following information.
Neils OLSEN was in fact Nils OLSSON, born on 9 July 1840 in Reslöv, Sweden,
and baptised on 12 July 1840. He lived with his foster parents in Vinnö,
just south of Färlöv village, in Kristianstad län (county), Skåne landskap
(province).
His foster parents were Jon Larsson and Magnild NILSDOTTER.
Nils emigrated to Denmark sometime on or after 18 June 1855. This is the day
he obtained the certificate that would allow him to leave. Another boy of 15
got his certificate the same day, and came from the same area. He was Håkan
Andersson, born 9 April 1840, Färlöv. It's quite possible the boys travelled
together, and that they did not go far. Farlov is near the Danish border. He
may have had relatives or friends there to meet him.
His life in Denmark remains a mystery for the moment. I haven't yet
determined if Jensina CHRISTIANSEN was Swedish or Danish. I'm assuming they
met in Denmark, on the basis of the boy being just 15 at the time he
emigrated, but this may not be fact. With the border being so close there
could have been much easy movement between countries.
What I now do know is that they married and had a son Peter on 11 Feb 1873.
This date may help someone find his birth or baptism details, but I'm sorry
that I can't give you a parish or county name for either the marriage or
birth place. I did once post that I thought it might be Vibo. It is in
Nykøbing S* sogn (parish), in Ods herred (district), in Holbæk amt (county).
The only other piece of data comes from Peter's own account of his life,
which was found as part of his Naturalisation records. He said he and his
parents emigrated from Demark when he was 6 months old. That would make a
date around August 1873.
They went initially to Northern Queensland, and settled in the town of
Bowen. Peter says his mother died when he was 3, but we haven't as yet been
able to find this death. Someone suggester she might have run off with
another man.
Nils and Peter then moved to NZ in 1880, landing in Auckland but then moving
to Napier. He went to school there in 1881.
And that's it so far. I'm really keen to locate Peter's birth or baptism
records, and hopefully the date of 11 Feb 1873 will help. I'm also keen to
find the ship on which they travelled to Australia in 1873. They could have
landed at Bowen or Townsville I guess.
Best regards
Kevin
