That's not what his site did. The All-in-1 site provided an alternate
web form interface to Ellis Island's search engine, that brought you to
THEIR results page, which INCLUDED all of their advertising and
merchandising. So Ellis Island certainly wasn't losing out on anything
by people using that alternate interface.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation (SOLEIF) is a non-profit
organization. Corporate grants and individual donations paid for the
database and the web site. The transcription work was all done by
volunteers. The merchandising only recoups a SMALL part of the costs.

The comments about deep linking are incorrect. Some courts have declared
some forms of deep linking to be illegal, in certain restricted cases,
in certain parts of certain countries. Other courts have upheld deep
linking as perfectly legit. Have you read the Terms and Conditions
(T&Cs) on the Ellis Island site? THOSE are what determine whether deep
linking is permissible.

There are many ways that this could have been handled by SOLEIF. Sending
a "Cease and Desist" mail was not the best.

IF you are dissatisfied with what they did, express your disleasure in
whatever fashion you feel suitable.
