Are you certain that it was the 1800's and not the 1900's ?
When somebody gets another name according to the law of 1904, we often say
that they bought the name. The reason is that you have to pay a certain
amount of money for sending in the application. At the moment I think about
450 US $.

Yes, but you have to understand that these were not family-names. Before
1828 ordinary people (>99% of the population) had _no_ family names. People
had a first-name, a patronym and sometimes an additional name.
In my family we have been using Helbo as an additonal name for at least 300
years. Nevertheless my grandfather could not use it as a family-name until
he had got a change of name in 1917.

Name changes according to the law from 1904 were granted through a "royal
resolution". Ours is signed by the prime-minister, and a copy should be
available at the national archives. This can be very interesting, because
the application should have a good reason. As my grandfather send in the
application, he had to prove that the name had been used in the family for
a long period. This was done with birth- and death-certificates as far back
as my great-5-grandfather.
This material should also be available at the archive.

I am not quiet certain that I understand this. Could you post the entry
esactly as it is found in the archive? I think that would make it a lot
easier.
